{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event happened on the third lap when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit track officials can be authorized to just run across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the governing body
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were notified and put on alert to enter the track and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send officials were canceled and a safety warning flag was raised in that area"
"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
