Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Title Defense with Thrilling Overtime Win
The Thunder star joined the Thunder back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the decisive baskets deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 win over the Houston Rockets.
The reigning MVP scored 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a positive start.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a career-high five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, was instrumental together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defence," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their performance. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their arena, while the squad were awarded their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to get some payback on this Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Pistons.
In other action, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was not enough to stop his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he recovers from sciatica.
